At the root of her expression is found a desire of setting motion. As the shapes settle to lay down on paper, Clémence Bouchereau plays with what matter offers and makes the signs dance; a shape brings another which brings another. Then is drawn an abstract language that gives its own rhythm – a continuous flow in which several terms vary and overlap, spread out and condense. Facing present-day agitation, Clémence works an outstanding temporality. The motion of the paintbrush emerges and progresses in a contemplative state. There remains the mark of a peculiar and primitive alphabet, an abstract calligraphy that invites to meditation.
Clémence Bouchereau is mostly known for the direction of "La saison pourpre", an animated short-film co-produced by Arte and Bandini Films and noticed by the critiques as evidenced by awards and selections (2023 Cannes Film Festival – Critics’ Week, the André Martin award at the Annecy Animation Film Festival, the SACD award at the Clermont-Ferrand Short-Film Festival, the Short-Film Grand Prix at the Lisboa Animation Festival, MONSTRA).
After her last film, Clémence breaks up with figurative art to embrace abstraction and pursue her research in painting, somewhere where improvisation tracks the vitality of her strokes. Seeing the unexpected spring in the act of presence is at the heart of her practice.
Born in 1989 in Loire-Atlantique, she nowadays lives and works in Ardèche, South of France.
